Welcome Seafood Restaurant – KOTA KINABALU, Malaysia

Food is undeniably one of the things I look forward to when travelling. Obviously, I love to eat! But other than that,  I believe that eating local dishes is one of the easiest and most effective ways to understand one’s  culture and tradition.  That’s why I’ve decided to feast on local seafood for my first night in Kota Kinabalu. Well, the fact that  KK is surrounded by sea,  it would be a shame not to try their local seafood right? 

While in search for a good place to eat, our tour guide gave us a few recommendations – Welcome Seafood, the Old Village, Twin-sky and a lot more. We picked Welcome Seafood Restaurant as it offers a wide array of fresh, good quality and reasonably priced seafood.  No wonder it’s a popular dining destination for both the locals and the tourists. The number of people eating and waiting to be seated says it all.

We arrived at 7:30 Pm and we were approached  right away by one of the English-speaking waiters. He quickly explained that we were to select live seafood of our choice and they would cook it to our liking whether it was prawns, lobster, crab, squid, scallop or whole fish.

With so many options it was hard to decide on what we wanted to eat. But as a sucker for prawns and crabs, that was immediately picked and thrown into our basket. As well as “kangkong” (river spinach) and Chinese cabbage to go along with the seafood. The waiter was helpfully making suggestions on how the food should be cooked (steamed / fried) and which sauce goes best if you aren’t sure.

All the waiting paid off when the food was served to us, and without a word we feasted on it. Nothing can get fresher than this.  Each plate was perfectly cooked to our specific liking! Yuumm…

The two veggie dishes were simply crunchy and delicious. You can order this stir fried with eggs or with sambal belacan. We have ours with belacan.


Steamed prawns and creamy crabs

The shrimp was sweet, tender and juicy.  The crab was cooked to perfection, love the creaminess of the sauce, saltiness of the meat and the spices somehow tied all the flavors together in harmony. 

We finished all the dishes and sure we weren’t disappointed. I think it was a choice well made.  Absolutely a place to dine!
